A Fetching State of Grace 
The Fetch It event consists of a 40’ x 12’ stage or dock with a swim-
ming pool at the end. A moveable bumper hangs 4’ above the water. 
Starting on the dock or platform, the dog takes off running for the 
pool on his owner’s cue. He dives into the pool, aiming for the sus-
pended bumper. To complete a successful jump, the diving dog must 
either grab the bumper or otherwise fully dislodge the bumper from 
its suspended position. If the competitor successfully completes a 
distance, they return to the line and await the next distance. Round 
after round, the bumper moves a foot farther. If the dog misses, they 
receive another chance to complete. If they miss again, they are 
eliminated from the competition.

Part Ultimate Frisbee 
Freestyle Flying Disc is a toss-
and-fetch event where the handler 
and dog perform choreographed 
routines. It requires technical skill 
with a healthy dose of showman-
ship. The routines are two-and-a-
half minutes, set to the music 
of the handler’s choosing.  
     The handler sometimes uses 
their body as a prop that the dog 
can jump off, stand on or balance. 
Each skill awards them points. 
They are also judged on creativity, 
style and catch ratio.
