      Pinkerton Pop-Ups evolved after 
she painted the portrait of a friend’s 
Saint Bernard on a panel of wood. Her 
friend attached the paneled art to their 
baby’s crib. 
      Today, Sue exhibits Pinkerton Pop-
ups at art shows and galleries. Her work 
has appeared on greeting cards and lim-
ited-edition prints. The name was 
inspired by her dog, Pinkerton, which 
was inspired by America’s first private 
eye, Allan Pinkerton, who founded 
Pinkerton’s National Detective Agency 
in 1850.  
      Sue has an affinity for competing 
with her dogs in nose or scent work, an 
enrichment activity in which dogs use 
their noses to find the hidden locations 
of various scents.  
      While Allan Pinkerton became 
widely known as an expert detective, 
Pinkerton, Sue’s dog, has become very 
astute at detecting scents. In fact, he’s 
become a high-level competitor in the 
sport. They compete in and around 
Palm Beach, near their Palm Beach 
Gardens 
home, 
including 
the 
Obedience Training Club of Palm 
Beach County. Pinkerton also loves 
agility, and Sue makes sure he does that 
for fun at least once a week.  
      Dogs have always played a big part 
of Sue’s life. Growing up, her family had  
Cocker Spaniels. When she married and 
moved to Nantucket, the couple had 
Springer Spaniels, some they hunted 
while others were show dogs. 
      Then, the English Cocker Spaniel 
caught her eye. “They’re basically the 
same breed of dog, only smaller,” Sue 
said. She has had a total of five English 
Cocker Spaniels.  
      There  is also a black cat named 
Bob in the family. Of course, he thinks 
he’s a dog too.  
      Art has sustained Sue’s curiosity 
and creativity. Pinkerton Pop-Ups was 
the bridge that connected her to other 
dog lovers during a time when our 
world closed its doors. Today, meeting 
new people through her Pinkerton 
Pop-Ups might just be her second most 
favorite thing. Her first favorite thing 
would probably be competing with 
Pinkerton in nose work or agility. 
Anything, to have him by her side.
