Firefighters do their best to rescue pets from a burning home. “Most times, 
though, we don’t even know there are pets in the home,” said Captain Ryan 
Tussing, a firefighter with the 
Avondale 
Arizona 
Fire 
Department. “I have had to 
give the heart breaking news 
that a family pet didn’t survive 
a house fire far too many 
times.”  More than 40,000 pets 
are lost in residential fires every 
year, and many emergencies 
occur when families aren’t 
home.  
Tussing, along with his 
twin brother Rusty, created 
Rescue Retriever to help save 
more pets should the unthink-
able 
occur. 
The 
Rescue 
Retriever not only alerts fire-
fighters and first responders that 
pets are in the home, but will 
also help them navigate towards 
the pet.The silent strobing alert 
system, activated by smoke 
detection, alerts first responders that a pet rescue is needed. The paw-shaped

Barnhunt Fun
Until now, the Tampa Bay area 
Barn Hunt trials have been few 
and far between. The closest 
trials were in Deland. Other 
locations are even farther away. 
Earlier this year, the 
Dog Training Club of Tampa 
began hosting more Barn Hunt 
Trials in their indoor 
air-conditioned facility.
