THE ART OF DOG
One of These Is Not 
Like the Others
An artist may believe they’re creating for themselves. 
But connecting with an audience is like that moment 
you catch your dog staring at you. Is there anything 
more reassuring or peaceful than a look of uncondi-
tional love?  
      For Sue Slick Carlson, that’s the moment of zen: 
when the recipient of one of her commissioned 
Pinkerton Pop-Ups looks into the eyes of the 3D 
portrait and says, this looks just like my dog. 
      Sue is a full-time artist, retired art teacher, and 
owner of Art Van Go, a traveling children’s art studio 
she’s been operating for 20 years.  
      She draws with India ink, paints with water-
based paint, and sculpts with wood and wire.  
Sometimes, like with Pinkerton Pop-Ups, Sue com-
bines all of those materials.“I love working with 
wood,” she told us.  
      Art Van Go brings the complete art studio to a 
group of children for private functions like a birthday 
party or a school event. Sue teaches drawing with art 
history behind it. Business was booming until the pan-
demic hit. “COVID temporarily shut me down,” she 
said. Like so many others, Sue took the time to reflect 
on her next chapter, including developing her art.
