We decided to keep her name, Luna, as we didn’t want to
confuse her—but we decided to give her a middle name: Blue,
after A Kind of Blue by Miles Davis.
She came with papers—two pages from her recent visit to
the vet. That’s it. She was spayed and had a hernia repair, which
explained the shaved square patch of skin on her belly. Anyone
who owns a French Bulldog knows how treacherous it is for
them to go under anesthesia for a procedure. I thought to myself
how many times she had gone through this only to have yet one
more operation. No wonder she gets skittish every time we take
her to the vet or the spa.
Luna had been used as a breeding conveyor belt. I don’t
think she left her crate much, and I can’t imagine the anguish of
birthing babies and loving them, only to have all of them taken
from her, and that cruel process start over and over again. I
remember when we got home, she noticed Pip’s crate in the
mudroom. She made a beeline for it, went to it, and got in. I
said, “Oh no, you don’t have to do that ever again. This is your
house, and you can be free in it.”
I had to sleep with her on the couch that night because we
were still getting Pip and her settled in, and, as it turned out, Pip
would fall ill the day after we brought Luna Blue home. We did-
n’t know it at the time, but four days later Pip would pass away.
What I do know is that in those few days he had the com-
pany of Luna, they talked a lot. I know this because when we
came home with Pip in our arms, ready to be buried, she waited
for a long time, then went over and picked up one of his favorite
toys and set it on Dwight’s foot. It was like she was honoring
him and letting Dwight know that it was going to be tough, but
we would get through it together. I’ll never forget that moment.
It was tough—the toughest week. I’ve never seen Dwight cry so
much.
Now, Luna and Dwight have developed their daily naptime
routine. It’s so sweet that it should come with a dental warning.
Dwight puts her in the bed. She makes her way to my side of
the bed, sits, and watches him. Then, when he lays down, Luna
lies down next to him. Dwight gives her lots of kisses and then
covers her with the blankets. Luna sighs deeply, and then they
both drift off. Seriously, it’s the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. I
know Dwight misses his sleeping buddy so much, but I’m sure
Pip would smile from (gigantic) ear to ear to know that Luna
was providing some comfort to his sleeping buddy.
Some people believe in serendipity. Others in coincidences.
I believe in Divine Intervention, and Luna is the living person-
ification of that. She came when we didn’t know we needed her,
and she helped us heal through a very traumatic experience. She
helps us every day as we wake up and see her sweet, scraggly-
toothed face.
Her chocolate brown eyes, with the pitchblack irises, seem
to look into the very depths of our souls. Every time she cuddles
up to us or stares into our eyes with so much love, we know she
was meant to be with us. We don’t know how long we will have
with her—she’s been through a lot, and she is one tough dog—
but she is nearly six years old. All we know is that we will
cherish every single minute we get to spend in her presence.
All heart.That’s what Luna is to us.
