THE NEW BARKER 51
It’s No Wonder We Love Dogs
They have always been an inspiration to
humans – from affecting change in animal
welfare (most recently, think Dexter’s Law and
Trooper’s Law) to creating art (think any artist
that’s graced the cover of The New Barker) to
developing useful inventions.
Did you know that a dog inspired George
de Mestral to invent velcro? During a walk
with his dog, Milka, he noticed the dog was
covered in cockleburs, which held onto the
fur even though they were not sticky. After
observing the burs under a microscope de
Mestral discovered they had a natural hook
shape. It took him nearly a decade to perfect
his two-sided fastener, now known as velcro,
which was used to hold a human heart
together during the first artificial heart sur-
gery. Gives new meaning to a velcro dog,
doesn’t it?
All of the products featured in this issue’s
Product Review column have a dog’s inspir-
ing story behind them. Some of the entities
behind the products donate their profits to
various rescue organizations, all in honor of a
dog’s memory.
Love, Greta With A Heart Debbie
Fedotenko created Love, Greta dog treats after
the passing of the family’s dog, Greta. Debbie
and her husband Ruslan adopted Greta while
living in Minneapolis. The health-conscious
family has always been committed to a diet of
premium quality foods for themselves and
their dogs.
All proceeds from the sales of Love, Greta
are donated to Mercy Full Project, a foster-
based rescue group in Tampa, Florida.
“The work Mercy Full Project is doing,
boots on the ground, is just unmatched in our
area,” Fedotenko said.
